Plagiarism? But I'm half a world away!
It's amazing what a like on Facebook and a quick comment about a style of what's being taught will uncover in our industry. Today was a normal day, eating lunch at my desk and taking a quick look at my wall when I saw a video which looked to have Martin Wheeler tagged from Systema I gave it a second look. I made a comment about the Krav shirts and that they tend to borrow a lot from other systems, mainly meaning that other than a true eclectic system than one that really has 'borrowed' from another system more times than not.
Anyway, after my comment about what was being taught and to whom he kindly corrected me saying that it wasn't Krav (even though it was being taught at a krav school and everyone there was wearing Krav shirts) and I gave a short reply of interesting none the less. Which it wasn't interesting at all, it was a boring video of a teacher being overly rough with a student that we see all too often from bad instructors. So now comes the interesting part, Antonio la Salandra messages me, who was the person posting the video and starts telling me he would love to come down and teach in California and other places because he has taught the police and other big agencies in his home town.
He then sends me a link to his website www.prodefensivesolutions.com to which I clicked the link to take a look at it. So the very first thing that stands out which I had to do a double take on was his very mention that he created the ECT system. See below in the second to the last paragraph.
So after he gives me the link to his website and I had the opportunity to see what all he posted, I gave him the link to mine.
Not 5 minutes after me posting this his site suddenly changed to 'Under Construction'.
Can you say busted?
So why bring all of this up? Because we have people out there in the world who have seen a few of Coach Blauer's videos and think to themselves that this would be easy to incorporate into their system and no one would be the wiser. The mindset is, if Coach is half a world away, there's no way he would find out that this person just plagiarized his work and called it their own. The huge main concern for all of this is that of course the liability would be huge! For one to think they had enough knowledge to give training to people who risk their lives on a daily basis and to believe they have enough proven scientific information to give them in order to save their lives in an ambush or critical incident from reading someone's work online or watching a video is asinine! This is not to mention that there are so many technical aspects that are not covered in videos that you get from personally attending a seminar and thinking you can regurgitate years of scientific and personal investigation that Tony did to create the Emotional Climate System (ECT) we know today, is precarious at best.
With all of that said, we should all have the mindset of making people safer but by doing so you have to have all of the information to do that and you cannot learn this on YouTube! Well unless of course it's maybe taking your greenbelt test from Master Ken to which case I need to get back to my studies. :)
